WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "NATURAL"?

Poppy___Monroe-48.jpg

Our makeup and skincare lines are all 100% natural and/or organic and contain no bismuth oxychloride, cornstarch, parabens or sulfates at a minimum. Most are Eco-Cert (learn more here) certified, representing the highest level of organic ingredients and environmentally conscious packaging currently available.

At a minimum, each nail polish we carry is free of these six toxic ingredients: formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene, DBT, TPHP and camphor.

Formaldehyde: Commonly used in nail hardeners and nail polish despite being classified as a known carcinogen by the U.S. National Toxicology Program. It is also used as a tissue fixative and an embalming agent.

Formaldehyde resin: A synthetic polymer used in circuit boards and molded products such as pool balls and coatings and adhesives.

Toluene: An organic solvent with the ability to dissolve paint, rubber, ink, adhesive and lacquers, among other products. It is frequently employed as an octane booster for internal combustion systems.

Dibutyl phthalate (DBT): A plasticizer and common additive to adhesives. It is suspected that DBT may disrupt the endocrine system and has been restricted from use in cosmetics by the European Union.

Camphor: Another chemical used in the embalming process, it also has applications as a plasticizer for nitrocellulose and in fireworks. It is highly flammable and toxic even in small doses.

TPHP: Commonly used as a fire retardant in furniture and a hardener in plastic goods, research suggests that the chemical causes changes in hormone regulation, metabolism, and reproductive systems. Ingredient information care of Aila Cosmetics

WHY DO YOU OFFER WATERLESS NAIL SERVICES?

Nails swell in water, which can encourage polish to chip and peel and causes nails to be susceptible to splitting or breaking. Waterless services reduce these inconveniences as well as the risk of complications due to water-borne bacteria and infections.  Poppy & Monroe strives to be as eco-friendly as possible, and going waterless means we are doing our part to conserve a valuable resource. Did you know that a typical salon uses 12 gallons of water per pedicure and almost 50,000 gallons per year on all combined services? We are proud to be doing away with that waste.

IF I'M NOT SOAKING, HOW ARE MY HANDS AND FEET CLEANED?

Health and safety are of our utmost concern. We begin all services by spraying each client's hands and feet with a refreshing botanical cleansing spray. This is followed by a warm towel wrap containing all-natural antibacterial essential oils. Our nail consultants wash their hands before every service and apply gloves before servicing each client.

HOW DO YOU DISINFECT YOUR TOOLS?

We take cleanliness to the extreme: we don't just sanitize, we sterilize! Many salons use chemicals or UV light boxes to disinfect their tools, which is perfectly legal, but not totally effective at killing bacteria and viruses. After each service, our metal tools are cleaned, disinfected and then processed in a hospital-grade, high temperature steam and pressure autoclave which is the only tool capable of killing 100% of all infective organisms. Files, buffers and porous tools used in our nail services are strictly single-use and are promptly disposed of. We take pride in the fact that our shop excels in hygiene protocols and welcome tours of our prep-lab.

DO YOU CUT CUTICLES?

The small area of skin is there to protect your nails from infection. When this skin is removed, your nail is left unprotected from bacteria and fungus. Cuticles should never be cut or trimmed as it leads to infections and ultimately damage to the nail. Frequent clipping also encourages your cuticles to grow back faster and more unsightly. We have adapted techniques which allow us to give a well manicured appearance to the cuticles without harmful clipping.

WHAT NAIL POLISH BRANDS DO YOU USE?

We are proud to be working with these wonderful, respected nail brands. Each of these lines are “10-free,” at a minimum meaning they do not contain the five toxic chemicals found in most polishes.

Poppy & Monroe (our own line of polishes)
Olive & June
Dazzle Dry
Luminary (Multiflex Hard Gel)
Madam Glam

WHAT IS SUGARING?

Sugaring is an all-natural, bacteria-resistant alternative to waxing. It’s a very simple and efficient process that uses only three ingredients: water, sugar and lemon. Sugaring doesn't pull the skin like wax, and because it removes hair from the follicle, it inhibits future hair growth so you can go longer between appointments. What’s not to love?

DO YOU DO EXTRACTIONS IN YOUR FACIALS?

As a proponent of holistic skincare, we avoid extractions as we feel the damage they can cause greatly outweighs their benefit. In our facials we make every attempt to clear your skin through detailed lymph massage techniques which offer a deeper cleansing than surface extractions. If you feel an extraction is necessary please discuss with your esthetician so she can evaluate the situation and utilize her professional discretion.

THE POPPY & MONROE TEAM

WHAT KIND OF TRAINING DOES YOUR STAFF RECEIVE?

Every staff member starts their journey during a trial period that includes extensive training on everything P&M. From sanitation to the perfect polishing technique and hospitality to how to craft the ideal "luxe brow,” the trainees learn the ins and outs of working in an all-natural environment. Trainees are under the tutelage of a Senior nail artist and esthetician as well as Karen, our co-owner, who is a certified manicurist.

Our trainees are often dumbfounded at the level of quality we demand; many don't make it through. But at the end, by the time we are confident that they have what it takes to provide superior service and quality to each and every guest, their skill levels are at a point they never thought possible. They often surprise themselves!
